Good news for the millions of South African Social Security Agency Sassa grant recipients is that on top of this year’s first increases taking effect in April, payment dates have been moved to an earlier “time slot”.
Sassa grants are usually paid between the third and fifth of each month. It is a problem that the 5th April falls on Saturday, as payment cannot be made on weekends or public holidays.
Sassa payment dates for April 2025
The Citizen received confirmation from Andile Tshona, a Sassa spokesperson on Monday. He confirmed that all permanent grant recipients will have their money available earlier in the month of April.
- Grant for Older People: Tuesday, 2 April
- Disability Grant:Thursday 3 April
- Friday, April 4, 2019: Children’s Grants
Sassa Grant Increases Effective April 2025
Enoch Godongwana, Minister of Finance and Economic Development (Enoch) announced in his delayed Budget Speech that the National Treasury will allocate R284.7 billion to permanent social grants for 2025/26.
The following increase will be effective from April 20,25.
- Grants for Old Age and Disablement (60 to 74 Years) by R130 up to R2,315
- Old age (75+) grantby R135to R2,335
- War Veterans Grant from R130 up to Rs 2,315
- Grant for Care Dependency from R130 up to R2,315
- Child Support Grant by R30 up to R560
- Foster Care Grant from Rs. 70 up to Rs. 1,250.
Sassa Gold Cards: What will happen after the 20th March deadline?
The deadline for Sassa Gold card holders to upgrade their cards and get the Postbank Black card is Thursday 20th March.
For those that were unable to switch by the deadline, the following restrictions apply:
- Even if there are funds on the account, no beneficiary can use their Sassa Gold card for any transactions.
- Sassa Gold cards will no longer be accepted in stores to purchase or withdraw money.
- Any attempts to use the card will be automatically rejected by the system.
- Sassa Gold cards will not work on ATMs. When inserting the card into an ATM, it may swallowed.
How to get your grant money
Bongani Dikeo, spokesperson for Postbank told the Citizen grant recipients that were unable to migrate would be still able collect their grants.
In April and May, they will be limited to withdrawing cash from South African Post Office branches or retailers till points .
Postbank continues to exchange the Sassa Gold card up until June 2025.
Postbank has urged those who have already received a black Postbank card to withdraw their funds from ATMs or the following retail outlets:
- Shoprite
- Usave
- Boxer
- Spar
- Choose n Pay
- Checkers
Postbank has stated that grant recipients who have black cards won’t be given assistance at Post office branches.
Foreign nationals are eligible for the program
The new black card is not available to foreign nationals.
Despite the fact that gold cards are no longer working, grant recipients can still use their existing documents to access their money in any post office. They must also bring along their current documents to ensure that they have a smooth experience.
